Oh, they took it out! :-)
There was a group of tabs at the top-right showing the available versions.
Once you selected the version, all the packages listed were the right
ones for your system (this can't be applied to the gimp registry, but a
cookie can store the version selected when the user chooses for the
first time)
It has been changed in getdeb. It seems that the version is
auto-detected and the interface looks much more cluttered now.
Anyway, the idea would be putting a tab group in the homepage, showing
something like: "Show extensions for Gimp v 1.0 / 2.0 / 2.2 / 2.4"
Then a cookie would remember the selection, so the dispayed extensions
match the Gimp version preferred (with the possibility to change to
another version, of course).
This way a user of 2.4 would have the right versions of the plugins
displayed first.
Imo, for a nice experience browsing a repository, a good hierarchy must
be defined.
1-Version of Gimp (this avoids filling the list with unusefull extensions)
2- Category (what is the extension for)
3- Type of extension preferred (plugin, script, etc.)
The current implementation lets you choose version OR category. It would
be nicer if you have steps to "fine tune" your search.
I know the advanced search does that, but with a proper hierarchy, the
user may find extensions easily, having the advanced search for...
advanced search :).
Using a version filter first would allow to focus in the next step
directly: category. You choose once the version, then you can browse
specifically what you are searching for. Category could serve as a main
menu.
I put the type in the last place because it would be useful as last
grouping category (Available plugins: list, available scripts: list, etc.)
Of course, that's in my opinion and is just a suggestion. What do you think?
Regards,
Gez.
