We can do this in several different ways. One idea would be "Albums",
where pictures would be added. The album module already has support
for grid and list views, thumbnailing, and so on. It is also pretty
easy to link to an album image from the description of the plugin (the
album provides a filter so that [acidfree:imgnumber] gets turned into
a thumbnail.

One thing we could do is introduce particular fields that can be
edited separately and will be layed out consistently. Is that what
you're looking for?
